Background of the Study
Cooperative farming is a collective approach where farmers pool resources, share knowledge, and work together to achieve economies of scale. In Nigeria, cooperative farming has been promoted as a means to overcome the challenges faced by smallholder farmers, including limited access to credit, modern inputs, and markets. Between 2023 and 2025, government and non-governmental organizations have supported the formation of agricultural cooperatives to improve productivity and bargaining power (Ogunleye, 2023). The theoretical framework underpinning cooperative farming is that collective action can reduce costs, increase access to technology, and improve market linkages, ultimately leading to enhanced agricultural output. Empirical evidence from several developing countries shows that cooperatives can lead to higher yields and improved income levels among members, thereby contributing to rural development and food security (Afolabi, 2024).
Despite these potential benefits, cooperative farming in Nigeria faces challenges such as weak organizational structures, inadequate management skills, and conflicts among members. Additionally, limited government support and lack of access to credit often hinder the growth and sustainability of these cooperatives. This study investigates the role of cooperative farming in enhancing agricultural output in Nigeria, examining its impact on productivity, income levels, and market competitiveness. It also explores the challenges encountered by cooperative societies and proposes recommendations to strengthen their operational capacity and overall effectiveness.
Statement of the Problem
Although cooperative farming holds promise for enhancing agricultural output, many cooperatives in Nigeria struggle to achieve their full potential. The main problem is that organizational weaknesses, poor management practices, and limited access to modern technology hamper the efficiency of cooperatives (Ibrahim, 2024). Internal conflicts and lack of trust among members further undermine collective action, resulting in suboptimal production and reduced income for participants. Moreover, inadequate support from government agencies, such as limited access to credit and extension services, exacerbates these challenges. The gap between the theoretical benefits of cooperative farming and the actual outcomes observed on the ground necessitates a detailed investigation into the factors limiting cooperative performance. This study aims to identify the structural and operational barriers that impede cooperative success and to propose strategies for improving their contribution to agricultural output and rural development (Nwankwo, 2023).
